Oktoberfest gives us another reason to celebrate a themed costume party. This festival is a Bavarian custom which had spread across Europe, and now all over the world.
Oktoberfest started in October 12, 1810, the wedding of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Everybody who resided in Munich was invited to celebrate their marriage in the surrounding fields. This celebration went on for five days and ended with an exciting horse race. A year after, the celebration was repeated. This time, it was for an agriculture cause.
The event became more and more popular and was ritualized every year. The small beer sellers became larger beer tents. Presently, Oktoberfest is already recognized as the celebration for changing of season. Even so, the agricultural show has become a well-known celebration wherever the German community exists.
With the necessity to drive buyers to these products there was a reason to export local customs and festivals as well. Oktoberfest is associated to beer drinking in major cities with huge beer tents.
In the last quarter of the year, there are more dark beers. This is because there are several brewers from large towns and cities who would produce their very own brews. These are very limited, highly prized, true beers of Oktoberfest because of the way it was made.
To match the beer, there is the traditional bratwurst with brot (bread) or Kaiser rolls. The Bratwurst is also served with German Mustard, Sauerkraut, and potato salad. If you cannot find Bratwurst, then you can simply have BBQ of sausages as an alternative. For decorations, the theme is anything associated with Autumn or Fall. You may also check out the internet for the decorations. Search for Munich and see how the people in Munich decorate the event. People use paper products so the cleaning up will be automatic and easy.
If you want to wear costumes, just for fun, there are lots of costumes to choose from, based on the German Lederhosen which has been popularized during Oktoberfest. The ladies can choose a costumer from a German Beer Maid to Tavern Girl.
Oktoberfest is just the perfect example of a local celebration transformed to a local agricultural event that became a global festival.
